Don't Let Your Students Zoom Out
As we enter the second week of the eLearning Training Institute, I wanted to share a really good article about the limitations of Zoom meetings. As we navigate what our fully online courses will look like in the fall, it is important that we not lose sight of the need for active learning. Any "lecture" of 15-20 minutes needs to be followed by interaction but it also needs to be varied. Think about your participation in Zoom meetings. Do you find yourself losing interest or being distracted? Breana Bayraktar has some good suggestions here on how you can keep students engaged.

A Dickens for the 21st Century
Can old things be made new again within the context of 21st
century cultural norms? A paper by Megan Witzleben with Hilbert College suggests
just that. She writes, "Today, we may not teach Dickensian prose as
superior. However, we do seek to empower students through verbal and cultural
literacy to connect them with influential stories of the past and present. This
paper demonstrates how teaching a little-known Dickens detective story, “Hunted
Down,” in its original serialized context, and then performing a dramatic
reading of that story to a community partner, helps students understand Dickens
in his own time and in ours." What she is suggesting is another way to incorporate
active learning into our classes. She even suggests some service learning opportunities
around the work of Dickens. I encourage you to view the student's personal journals

Does Active Learning Work?
Dr. Donna M. Qualters uncovers some interesting information
in her research study Do Students Want to be Active? Four important themes
emerged from the analysis: the students had an overall positive attitude
toward active learning; active learning was perceived to enhance their
ability and efficiency in studying; active learning was perceived to
improve the learning environment; and, active learning promoted their
thinking about their learning and thus helped them to better understand their
individual learning style. She also uncovered a few negatives that could easily be
converted using the right interventions. She concludes by writing,
"The most important need to be addressed is the inability of some students
to deal with change. Many of these students come to higher education with
expectations of very passive classroom experiences and those expectations must
be uncovered, probed and altered. For some students it may go as far as the
necessity to reframe what learning is: learning is not about covering material
or gathering facts, learning is about integrating and using information in a
meaningful way."

SQ3R Is Not a New Star Wars Character
It is about that time in the semester when we begin to notice a pattern developing. We have assigned reading for our students and reminded them that it should be done before the class so that they can come with prepared questions. Yet they don't seem to have grasped the concept and so we fall back into presenting the entire reading material during class rather than using our active learning teaching interventions that promote deeper learning. We have shared some teaching interventions that work in this blog before. Dr. Dimple J. Martin offers us another process that she uses that may work for you as well. Dr. Martin writes, "First, let’s acknowledge
this universal epidemic. College students despise reading textbooks and e-books
that cover content with academic information. Fortunately, I discovered a cure
for the reading plague that only requires five teaspoons of ingestion: 1)
survey 2) question 3) read 4) retrieve and 5) review. In my class, I have found
the SQ3R Method to be a step-by-step approach to learning and studying from
textbooks. Although it took my students time and practice to master this
method, it has been valuable in regards to preparing students for more
content-driven class discussions, increased retention and understanding of

An Inventory Helps to Promote Higher Order Thinking
One of the issues I hear from many of you is the problem we encounter when students do not do the assigned reading prior to class. It certainly creates multiple teaching and learning problems and can really stifle the entire class. One of the suggestions I have made to help alleviate this problem is to have an "As You Come Into Class" question(s) on the board. In that way, as they are getting settled and I am checking attendance, they can be thinking more deeply about some of the things I plan to discuss in class. It helps to alleviate those "top of mind" responses that are usually anecdotal and totally off-topic. I also want to suggest something that Karen Harris uses in her classes. Her learning outcome is focused on having students use higher order critical thinking. She describes her teaching experience as a thinking inventory. Harris says, "Although a thinking inventory is made up of questions, it’s more than
a questionnaire. When we say we’re “taking inventory”—whether we’re in a
warehouse or a relationship—we mean we’re taking stock of where things
stand at a given moment in time, with the understanding that those
things are fluid and provisional. With a thinking inventory, we’re
taking stock of students’ thinking, experiences, and sense-making at the
beginning of the course. A well-designed thinking inventory formalizes the essential questions
of any course and serves as a touchpoint for both teacher and students
throughout that course." You can read the details of her inventory here. Students are engaged by learning that can be tied to real life. Assuring them that being able to think critically and offer the best solution in the workplace will always benefit them is the go to answer for how this relates to real-world situations.

Group Work Helps Students Solve Real World Problems
We often talk about the differences between high school and college, We even have a section about the differences in our (Open Educational Resource) textbook for College Success Skills, but that argument may be obscuring the fact that teaching and learning is just that. Stating that premise, a recent article about high school mathematics teacher Sandra Cover really got me excited. She is using a very unique method in her classroom that acknowledges the real world. The first reality is that many of today's problems are solved by teams. The second reality is that it is rare that the first suggestion for a solution is adopted without back and forth from members of that team. Covers allows students in her trigonometry class to work in groups and allows them to revise their work (even assessments) when it is incorrect. Cover, who teaches at Lakeview High
School in Battle Creek, Michigan, developed this new approach after
realizing her students were learning the “what” of math, but not the
“how” or “why.” One of the reasons I am so excited about her pedagogical approach is that I feel we can use it in any course we are teaching. Take a look at the entire article here and let me know what you think.

Colleagues at Rice University have posed an interesting topic in a post about active learning. I have written a number of posts about how and why active learning is a good teaching strategy. Many of our faculty at BRCC have adopted active learning strategies. Many of the strategies have come from the Active Learning Manual that I have published annually for almost a decade. But the article addressing active learning poses some good prompts that can help us to dig deeper into the topic. This one for instance: "For years, the term has filled a gap for us. It has functioned
rhetorically as a way to contrast evidence-based teaching practices (a
much better term, by the way) with more traditional methodologies, but
ultimately the wide-ranging utility of this classification is also its
drawback. Although, as Cynthia Brame notes,
some scholars have tried to create an operational definition for active
learning, they also acknowledge the category is enormously broad. This
breadth is not necessarily a bad thing in and of itself. Indeed, it
means that we have a lot of options for helping students to learn. The
problem is that active learning has come to mean all things to all
people and essentially encompasses everything that is not passive." You can read the entire article post here. Most people who have tried using virtual reality think it’s cool --
if at first a little nausea-inducing. Augmented reality and 3-D printing
and scanning at their best elicit awestruck expressions. Can these tools help students learn? Can institutions with
limited budgets pull off ambitious projects? Can skeptical faculty
members be convinced to experiment with unfamiliar technology? At their core, three-dimensional technologies allow students to “go
places they couldn’t otherwise go or do things they wouldn’t otherwise
do,” said D. Christopher Brooks, director of research at Educause. Virtual reality environments transport users
to space or inside microscopic cells; augmented reality gives students
superpowers of object manipulation. These experiences don’t spring up overnight, though. They require
structured collaborations between instructors, instructional designers

MAYBE A NUDGE CAN HELP YOUR STUDENTS
A few years ago, Dr. Zoë Cohen noticed a troubling sign in her
“Physiology of the Immune System” course: A larger number of students
than usual had failed the first exam. Cohen had changed up the way she
taught the course that year, part of a broader push
toward active learning at the University of Arizona, where she is an
assistant professor. The different style was probably a big adjustment
for her upper-level students after years of taking lecture-based
courses, she thought. Cohen wanted to help those students. But the course is a
large one, with between 160 and 200 students, and she didn’t want to
increase her workload. So she came up with a low-touch way to intervene:
sending a personalized, supportive email. For a small investment of
time, Cohen was able to signal to students that she cared. And she
thinks the move even boosted recipients’ performance in the course. Read the entire post here.

CAN YOU LEARN WHILE YOU SLEEP?
Hypnopedia, or the ability to learn during sleep, was popularized in the '60s, with for example the dystopia Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, in which individuals are conditioned to their future tasks during sleep. This concept has been progressively abandoned due to a lack of reliable scientific evidence supporting in-sleep learning abilities. Recently however, few studies showed that the acquisition of elementary associations such as stimulus-reflex response is possible during sleep, both in humans and in animals. Nevertheless, it is not clear if sleep allows for more sophisticated forms of learning. A study published this August 6 in the journal Scientific Reports by researchers from the ULB Neuroscience Institute shows that while our brain is able to continue perceiving sounds during sleep like at wake, the ability to group these sounds according to their organization in a sequence is only present at wakefulness, and completely disappears during sleep.
INTEGRATING ACTIVE LEARNING
James Salsich, writes, "During my career, I have at times struggled with the effectiveness of active learning in my classroom. But after reflecting and planning over the summer, I have always returned to school convinced more than ever of the dire need for our students to claim ownership of their learning. Active learning is student-driven, teaches students how to learn in collaboration with their peers, and asks teachers to give some portion of the authority that has traditionally been theirs over to students. Students, on the other hand, take increased ownership for the direction and progress of their learning. However, when we take a step toward this student-centered approach to teaching, we must first help our students to unlearn some problematic ideas. When we ask our students to adapt to a more complex, self-directed, self-regulated approach, we are often going against their very beliefs about how people learn. It is a process that is most successful when implemented gradually and purposefully." Continue reading here.

We all know Dr. Benjamin Bloom for his taxonomy but did you know that he also wrote about how learning occurs under different methods of instruction? Using research conducted by two of his doctoral students (which he guided), the 2 Sigma Problem emerged. The instructional methods were identified as conventional, mastery and tutoring. Although written in 1984, I am struck by the lack of movement from the conventional teaching method although active teaching leading to active learning has made an impact and continues to grow as practitioners discover news ways to ignite student performance. Of course we are left wondering which mode worked the best? Bloom, Anania, and Burke found that using the conventional mode of instruction as a baseline, students under mastery learning saw a one-sigma (standard deviation) improvement in performance. Students who received one-on-one tutoring saw a two-sigma improvement. As Alfred Essa, Vice President of R&D and Analytics at McGraw-Hill Education, explains "A one sigma is roughly a one-letter grade in improvement. It can be the difference between a student failing a course and passing a course—and most educational interventions don’t come close. If one sigma of improvement is huge, two is monumental." From Science Daily: Study shows for first time that a free, online course can
change students' mindsets towards their mathematical abilities, leading to
increased academic achievement. A free 'massive, open, online course' (MOOC)
designed to change students' attitudes towards mathematics makes them more
engaged in class -- leading to significantly higher test scores. Published in
open-access journal Frontiers in Education, these findings go against the
discouraging results of previous studies. It is the first of its kind to show
the impact of an online course in changing students' mindsets and beliefs about
mathematics and their achievement, with the potential for more widespread

From Univ. of Washington's The Daily: With all the recent advancement in science, from virtual
reality to genetic editing to artificial intelligence, one issue that
still plagues society is how best to teach students how these things
work. Dr. Carl Wieman, one of the world’s leading thinkers
on science education, spoke to a sizeable crowd at Kane Hall on
Thursday, April 26 to outline techniques for finding more effective
teaching tactics. Wieman holds a joint appointment as professor of
physics and of the Graduate School of Education at Stanford University.
He won the Nobel Prize in 2001 for his research in atomic and optical physics. Wieman,
67, argued for a shift away from lecture-style teaching toward what he
calls an “active learning” process where students spend more time
working with their peers than being talked to by professors. In his
physics classes, Wieman isn’t just teaching material, he is teaching his
students to become physicists through classroom activities, tests, and
critical reasoning.
From Education Week: Contrary to popular stereotypes, many young people are
acutely concerned about online privacy, spending significant time managing how
they present themselves on social media and worrying about what happens to the
digital trails they leave behind. That's the takeaway, at least, from new
research presented here Sunday at the annual conference of the American
Association of Educational Research by Claire Fontaine. As part of a small
study, Fontaine and colleagues interviewed 28 teens and young adults, ranging
from 16 to 26 years old. All were low-income New Yorkers, all owned a
smartphone or similar mobile device, and all regularly used at least one social
media platform.

Since we have learning objectives for each class we teach that correspond to broader course objectives, it is important to do a self check from time to time to make sure we are staying on track with both. Continuing to explore this topic, I have become more aware of alignment between the two in relation to my teaching. One of my course objectives is to help student to become better at critical thinking. Posing problems for them to solve and engaging them in group discussion while allowing for reflection time has created a truly active learning experience in my classroom. Lisa Nielsen's recent post about George Couros' book The Innovator’s Mindset provides a really clear visual for this process. Couros says that if we want innovative students, we must become innovative teachers. He goes on to list eight elements that he has noticed innovative teachers use to create this active learning environment that allows students to unleash their creativity. We are rapidly approaching the part of the semester/term when our students seem to really begin to zone out. They are waiting for the Thanksgiving break or the end of the semester, or something. Now is a really good time to look at using active learning in your classes. Dr. Maryellen Weimer offers some great ideas in this article. One of the suggestions she offers is, "How often do you ask a question and when do you ask it?
How often does depend on the teacher but there’s evidence from more
than one study that a lot of us over estimate how often we ask
questions. How often should you seek student contributions? More than
you do? Do you ask after you’ve covered a chunk of content and are
thinking about how much you still have to get through? Do you ask at the
end of the period when a lot of students are hoping nobody says
anything so they can get out a couple of minutes early?"

Sarah Jones, a doctoral student at Michigan State, reminds us in her insightful post that giving more low-stakes assessments has a multitude of benefits for our students. She writes that providing your student with low-stakes testing will "produce large improvements in student final exam scores, help narrow the grade gap between poorly prepped and highly prepped first year college student, and might even result in more positive course reviews." She cites research by Scott Freeman, David Haak, and Mary Pat Wenderoth (Published in the Life Sciences Education edition of The American Society of Cell Biology) who wrote "We found no evidence that points from active-learning exercises inflate grades or reduce the impact of exams on final grades. When we controlled for variation in student ability, failure rates were lower in a moderately structured course design and were dramatically lower in a highly structured course design. This result supports the hypothesis that active-learning exercises can make students more skilled learners and help bridge the gap between poorly prepared students and their better-prepared peers." Some may be worried that their already heavy workload will be further burdened by more assessment. But the use of Canvas can actually reduce the amount of grading you have to do if you set up the quiz or analysis using the LMS. You can also use peer review, a great active learning tool that enhances learning for all students.

Anyone reading this blog knows that I am big proponent of active learning. You should also know that I believe that students have a lot to learn from their peers and I try to infuse my class with opportunities for them to review their peer's work. A recent article by Tiffany Potter, Letitia Englund, James Charbonneau, Mark
Thompson MacLean, Jonathan Newell, and Ido Roll (University of British Columbia) entitled "ComPAIR: A New Online Tool Using Adaptive Comparative Judgement to Support Learning with Peer Feedback" provided me with a new appreciation for student interaction. One of the concerns of using peer review is that students, especially early in their college career, may not be able to properly evaluate someone else's work. What the folks from UBC found through their research is that using a comparison option alleviates some of that effect. Better yet, the process help students learn more deeply, improves their ability to assess their own work, and improves their capacity to provide feedback on the work of others in a collaborative learning environment. As we begin our 12 week classes today, I thought it would be good to revisit some of the strategies we can use to integrate active learning into all of our classes. The goal is to create self-guided learning. Not stressing about coverage allows us to teach our students how to learn and thus create critical thinkers for the future. Students may approach coursework from a fairly mechanistic stance: If
the instructor gives me information, I will memorize it, and get a good
grade. This approach to learning doesn’t lend itself well to an active
classroom, which requires students to wrestle with difficult ideas in
order to lead to deeper conceptual learning. The good news is that most of your students are looking for cues from you on what you expect so they are malleable to your ideas. First, you might want to reflect on your own ideas about
learning? Your own implicit ideas can have a big impact on how you teach
(Good, Rattan and Dweck, 2012). Do you implicitly have performance
goals for your students – and yourself -- and a "fixed" rather than a "growth" mindset about
intelligence? Think about the messages that you send students. Do you
show your students that you want to be questioned during class, that you
own up to your own errors, and that you also can learn from them? Do you praise
students for their effort or their grades? Consider intentionally
framing your classroom for learning mastery. You can emphasize that learning takes effort and that anyone can improve if they work hard
(Dweck 2010; Good, Rattan and Dweck 2012; Anderman and Dawson, 2010).
You can create opportunities for students to reflect on the process of
their own learning so they become more self-directed learners (Elby 2001; Redish and Hammer, 2009; Bransford, Brown and Cocking, 2000).
Helping students reflect on their own learning, or “think about
thinking” is termed “metacognition,” a learned skill
that is unfortunately not directly addressed in many college courses. Spending a few minutes in each session about metacognition can pay off in big dividends when it comes to self-guided learning.

Being an effective teacher is really hard work. When we really dig deep to help students discover how to learn, the work is long but the results are sensational. There is new research that tells us that studying smarter rather than longer or harder is much more effective. Students who excel at both classroom and standardized tests such as the
SAT and ACT aren’t necessarily those who study longest. Instead, they
study smart—planning ahead, quizzing themselves on the material and
actively seeking out help when they don’t understand it. Researchers call them activist learner (which sounds a lot like active learners right?). That activist approach reflects what researchers call self-regulated
learning: the capacity to track how well you’re doing in your classes
and hold yourself accountable for reaching goals. So if you aren't doing it already, add another tool to your teaching toolkit and share this information with your students. If you want to read more, here is the entire article.

While we often talk about moving from lectures to more active learning methods, we sometimes forget an important component. Student feedback can be very useful when we are transitioning. That is why Dr. Grant Wiggins post about engaging lessons caught my attention. His results are from high schoolers but so many of the comments could be put to good use in our college classrooms as well. One student wrote, "I thought that making your own nation in politics was extremely
interesting and fun. It was interesting because it gave us students the
ability to design our perfect environment." How many different discussions can you see coming from this type of learning experience based on that response? In a time when students are becoming hyper-interested in the political system, assigning this type of learning experience could really allow students to develop critical thinking skills. Another student wrote, "For our AP French class we had to construct a resume and cover letter
for a foreign French related career opportunity that we found. This is
interesting as we learned a highly useful life skill that should’ve been
taught in another class but also because we got to explore opportunities
around the world." This illustrates the very critical need to make lessons as relevant as possible. It is one of the most repeated complaints that many students share about their classroom experience. How many times have you heard the question, "Why do we have to know this?" Luckily, active learning lends itself to these types of lessons. So as you begin thinking about increasing the amount of active learning you have in your classes, take a look at your student rating comments and use them to help shape your teaching.

The story about Dr. Carl Wieman in Inside Higher Ed is terrific. It begins, "As a Nobel Prize-winning physicist, Carl Wieman could probably get
away with being a mediocre teacher. Yet he’s devoted much of his career
to improving the ways colleges and universities teach science, in his
own classrooms and in one of the grandest experiments of his life: the
multicampus Science Education Initiative. Wieman’s new book chronicles the latter effort and makes a strong,
evidence-based case for pursuing broad changes in science instruction:
out with lectures and in with active learning. It’s also an easily
digested how-to guide for interested parties, including deans,
department chairs and other faculty members. The project has major
implications for administrators, too." I am looking forward to reading the book. As a proponent of active learning I am glad to see additional evidence-based results that prove its worth.
